The DW Team moves up a gear

On Sunday 24th February 13 of the 16 members of the Cranleigh DW Team were able to compete in ‘Waterside C’, a race of 23 miles from Pewsey to Newbury, involving 35 portages and a 300m tunnel. With most leaving home at 6am to get to Wiltshire for the early start, support teams and paddlers were eager to get going in what would be their toughest challenge so far.

With three team members absent owing to other commitments, some rearranging of pairs took place. This produced an impressively fast pair in Will Merrett and Jamie O’Neill who finished 12th out of 37 in the Junior Doubles in 4.07.25. The other male junior pair of Rowley Sims and Rob Hardwick had their best performance of the term, getting home in 4.29.25.
First home amongst the girls were again Amy Kelly and Ella Singleton in 4.40.54, a pair who are going from strength to strength. Special mention should be made of Wey Kayak Club coach, Peter Morley, who abandoned the towpath and his bike to pair up with Will Dixon-Hempstock. Will had an excellent race, just about keeping up with the cracking pace his partner set!

All can take much encouragement from completing this gruelling race and so being well on the way to making the DW in four weeks time a goal well within their grasp.
