Beaks beat Oiks

Thanks to the enthusiasm of Mr Frank Hardee, a special Masters v UVIth Schools Challenge Quiz game was held at 5-30pm on June 19th in the Reading Room. A sizeable audience attended and were surprised (as were the Common Room team) by the aptness of quiz-master Alan Smith’s quip following the (correct) answer of ‘massacre’ to one of the questions!

As referee/scorer I explained that the set of questions was the same as used for the recent National Final, won by Winchester for the third year in a row. Winchester scored 920 but in our match the ‘beaks’ managed 1,120: the highest by a team I can recall in my 29 years running the South Central Region. The UVI team was selected by David Tysoe who has been a star of these quiz matches for five years and he selected Tom Chevis, James ‘Huggy’ Harrison and Jack Hartley.

The winning team might have been expected to be beaten on buzzer reaction time but the fastest finger was that of the most senior competitor, John Thompson. His colleagues were Tim McConnell-Wood, Paul Leggitt and Frank Hardee and all four astounded the audience with the range of their knowledge, even correctly identifying the colour of Dipsy the Teletubby.
