Dashwood Piano Performance

Friday 14th November saw the launch of the new format for the Helen Wareham Competition with three piano players from the Senior Piano Class going on to the semi-final stage next term. These were Chloe Allison, for a masterly rendition of a Mozart Fantasia; Fred Hickman, who also played Mozart; and James Reynolds, for his dramatic Liszt playing. On that next occasion one of these pianists will receive the Dashwood Piano Competition prize.

The Junior Dashwood prize went to Isabel Simpkin (IVth Form) for her very atmospheric performance of a Chopin Nocturne and Mr Cyril Dashwood, the generous benefactor of the prize, was on hand to award it. He handed the envelopes for second and third prize to Elinor Morgan (Prokofiev with panache) and Tom Hollister (sensitive Schubert).

The well-supported event in the MMS, with 90 minutes music-making from 22 of the 60 pupils who have piano lessons, was adjudicated by Director of Music, Marcus Pashley. Head of Keyboards, Richard Saxel, paid fulsome tribute, not only to the competitors, for reaching so high a standard while doing all their other studies and activities, but also to his five fellow piano teachers.

A full review will appear in the 2009 ‘Cranleighan’ magazine.
