West House, the second of Cranleigh's two girls' Houses, was formally opened by Baroness Greenfield in June 2002, towards the end of its first year of hectic Cranleigh life. The decision to move to full co-education had been taken in December 1997, and the design of West started soon after that.
Up until 2001, West had been a boys' House and was one of five 'in-school' Houses accommodated in the main buildings. It certainly took a while before former West boys were prepared to accept the new West! Many of the old West facilities were converted into classrooms and other academic resource rooms.
The new West House is home to just over a hundred girls, as well as to two families who live at either end of the building: those of the Housemistress and the Deputy Housemistress.
There is enough space for each Sixth Former to have her own study-bedroom (as is the case in all Cranleigh Houses) and there are also common rooms, kitchens (called 'moabs' in Cranleigh-speak) and the usual range of washing facilities.
Two Matrons help with the running of the House, along with nine female members of Common Room who act as Tutors to the girls.
