The Art Department has always played a major role in the life of many Cranleighans, despite the fact that the Department itself is housed on the outer edge of the campus.  It has been felt for some time now that bringing the teaching of Art into the centre would add greatly to the life of the whole School.   We are also looking to reinforce the way in which Design & Technology is currently taught by introducing a stronger element of visual design.   Bringing these two disciplines close together will help this aim and will encourage the sharing of ideas and equipment.

To achieve this, we are aiming to create an Art & Design School in the area of the old gym, the old Science School and the Rhodes Block.  The plan is to demolish the existing post-war Science buildings while retaining the original 1913 Science School (the  lower limb of the H-shaped building model shown in the top photo on the right).

Once the site is cleared, the 1913 Science School will then be extended to provide further facilities in the remaining sections of the H-shaped building.  The  overall accommodation will comprise a spacious exhibition gallery, six large and airy studios, storage spaces and offices.

The Old Gym and Rhodes Block will  be refurbished to accommodate Design & Technology and also to provide additional space required by Art.   At the same time, it is proposed to demolish the old squash courts and the 1960s building currently occupied by Design & Technology (the Old Music School).  This will restore a 'breathing space' between the various buildings and emphasise the link between the new Art & Design School and the rest of the campus.
