Academic Competitions

Academic Competitions
For pupils who enjoy trying their hand (or mind!) at some extra-curricular cerebral activities, Cranleigh offers an extensive Academic Competitions programme, run by Oxford graduate and Politics teacher Frank Hardee. All years can participate in these internal activity sessions, which are run during the weekday activity slots, and from which will arise regular inter-House competitions and entry into regional and national events.

Debating

CC_criticalthinking_banner.jpg

The School runs a number of debating competitions both internally and externally in a wide range of formats. Those that come to the Academic Competitions club get the chance to try out a variety of debating styles, from pre-preparation motions to British Parliamentary (BP) style debating, which  gives the debaters only 15 minutes to prepare a motion before speaking.

Inter-House Competition

This Competition runs every Lent term and involves four members from each House – one IVth Former, one Vth Former and two VIth Formers (one speaker, one helper). The competition is run under short-preparation whereby teams find out the motion only 15 minutes beforehand. The 2008-2009 winners were North.

Debating Matters

This competition is run by the Institution of Ideas – a left-wing think tank that promotes deep thought about a number of issues. The unique format allows competitors to interact with top-level academics and celebrities as well as their opponents. In 2009-2010 we lost out in the first round to a very tough Godalming College team, who subsequently went on to the regional final.

ESU Mace Debating

This competition, run by the illustrious English-Speaking Union, allows pupils a lengthy period in which to build a convincing argument about a pre-prepared motion. In the 2009-2010 Nicola Hardwick and Henry Wilson made it through to the regional final in Sevenoaks, where they will face Lancing College in a few weeks’ time.

Oxford Schools Debating

This debating competition is of the famed British Parliamentary format, and involves pupils thinking on their feet. It is run by the world-renowned Oxford Union Society and produces some of the best debaters in the country. Each year we enter three teams into the Guildford regional round, but as yet have not made it to nationals stage.

Young Debaters’ Competition

The Young Debaters’ Competition is aimed at those lower down the School, IVth Form and LVth, so giving pupils a chance to debate competitively for the School at a younger age. Currently we have a number of promising young debaters, and we have high hopes for the 2010 competition – the results of which will be published on the Current Community/Academic Competitions pages. Guy and Hilli Waller are coming to support our three teams this year.

Public Speaking

Public Speaking competitions in the School are relatively new, and in addition to the inter-House competitions, we enter the local Rotary Club competition both at Intermediate (IVth Form) and Senior levels, and also the English-Speaking Union's competition.

Junior and Senior Inter-House Competitions

Introduced in 2008, the House Public Speaking Competitions follow the Rotary Club format. Unlike the debating, which pits one House against another, all Houses compete together. Again, unlike the debating, Houses may choose their own topics and in addition to the main speaker must provide a chairman and a proposer of the vote of thanks. This year, 2009-2010, the Junior competition was won by West and the Senior Competition by North.

ESU Public Speaking

Primarily an external competition for Vth Formers, this public speaking competition has an interesting twist – the chairman and the questioner come from another school. This means that our questioner and chairman have to think on their feet, as they will be commenting on another school’s performance! This year (2009/2010) our speakers’ topic is about whether or not a gap year for university should be compulsory. The latest post-event report can be viewed on the Current Community/Academic Competitions pages in due course.

Rotary (Intermediate and Senior)

The Rotary Club organises a public speaking competition called ‘Youth Speaks’. It comes in two sections – an Intermediate section (IVth Formers) and a Senior section (Vth and VIth Formers). We traditionally do well in the Seniors competition, making it to the district final in the past two years.

National Youth Parliament

Each year we enter the National Youth Parliament video competition run by the Citizenship Foundation – a competition in which we claimed the winning 2008 entry. We also had three individual national winners, who claimed the titles of Best Government Spokesperson, Best Opposition Spokesperson and Best Backbench MP. The competition requires the pupils to produce and film a debate ‘in Parliament’ (our Reading Room), along with a short mock Prime Minister's Questions session. The 2008 topic was ‘a Bill to Combat the Problems of Obesity in 21st Century Britain’. In 2009 we came 12th in the country, but sadly in 2010 the competition stopped running. We hope to enter again in 2011.

Subject-Specific Competitions
In addition to the formal Academic Competitions programme, there are a number of subject departments that run their own academic competitions. Please visit the individual departmental entries to see those events.
Schools' Challenge

Cranleigh has competed in this nationally-organised quiz competition, along with most of the leading schools of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, for nearly 30 years. The master-in-charge since 1980, and also Regional Organiser for the South Central region, is Mr Peter Longshaw. It is over 20 years since Cranleigh won the regional competition, as in recent years Westminster has dominated the group and been National Champions four years in a row.

There are two inter-House competitions: one (in the Michaelmas Term) which reflects the mix of two Juniors and two Seniors required for the inter-school contests, and a Junior competition in the Lent Term which allows two UVth, a year squeezed out by the age restrictions for juniors in the previous term’s competition, to take part. The ten half-hour contests and home inter-school matches are chaired by Mr Alan Smith.

Other Academic Competitions Events

As and when we feel it appropriate, we take pupils to a number of other events that get them thinking beyond their comfort zone.

Model United Nations (MUN)

In addition to all the debating we do, occasionally we are invited to take part in a Model UN (MUN) conference at another school (e.g. Haberdashers' Aske’s Boys’ School, Easter holidays 2009). This involves a group of pupils representing a country in a simulation of the crises that the UN have to deal with on a daily basis. It makes pupils think about the world and the notion of international relations in a different way.

Young Consumer of the Year Quiz

Run by trading standards, this fun and interactive quiz allows LVth pupils to find out about a number of issues of citizenship, economics and politics as well as some general knowledge. The team last year finished third in the regional final and, although slightly disappointed, all felt that they had learned a great deal - and will hopefully come back stronger than ever this year.

We are currently in talks with the regional organiser about hosting the South Eastern regional final 2009 at Cranleigh. Further details to come...

European Youth Parliament Discussion Day

Motions about security, politics and finance. This competition is used as a preparation for the potential Oxbridge politics/economics candidates. In 2008 we did not ‘win’ on the day, but all had a good time and took a lot away from the experience.
