Politics

Departmental Overview

The Politics department is a lively and vibrant place that is very academically successful. We are a large department in terms of VIth Form teaching and currently roughly a third of all VIth Formers take the subject, making us the joint second largest A level department. The department welcomes anyone who has a genuine interest in studying politics and at the beginning of AS level, we assume zero political knowledge. We are highly resourced with interesting and up-to-date materials and use the web to supplement learning.

Academic Overview

AS

The AS politics course gives students an insight into the way in which politics works in the UK today – looking at democracy, political parties, pressure groups, elections, parliament, the constitution, the Prime Minister and the role of judges. By using numbered handouts as a basis for all note-taking, which, incidentally our students find very easy to revise from, we can spend the bulk of time in lessons discussing and debating issues and ideas. Most students like this style of teaching as it allows them to express their own opinion – always a hit with Cranleighians! Students take two examinations with a variety of short-answer, extended writing, essay and source-based questions.

A2

Currently we teach the ideologies course at A2, although this is currently under review and may change as the new specification comes into force. Very much like AS, the emphasis is on discussion and debate backed up by numbered handouts. However, this course requires students to get to grips with complex but exciting concepts and ideas. Exam essays are the main way of assessment and students need to develop the techniques of analysis and evaluation of arguments to do well. We currently look at socialism, liberalism, conservatism, feminism, anarchism, multiculturalism, environmentalism and nationalism.

Examination Results

We achieve superb exam results: 100% A or B at A level 2006/07 and 100% A, B or C in 2007/08.

Departmental Events and News

In recent years we have taken trips to London, Russia and, in February 2009, Northern Ireland.

We also take part in the Citizenship Foundation’s National Youth Parliament Competition– in which the 35-strong Cranleigh School team was crowned overall winner 2007/2008 (http://www.citizenshipfoundation.org.uk/main/news.php?n620) against 120 secondary schools, thanks to its informed and impassioned debate on 'Combating Obesity in 21st century Britain'. We all attended the prize-giving ceremony in Westminster, attended by the Prime Minister and leading MPs, on Wednesday 2nd July. In addition to the overall prize, Individual titles in the competition were won by the following:

Best Minister: Patrick "Paddy" Harman, Cranleigh School

Best Opposition Minister: Benedict Sanderson, Cranleigh School

Best Backbencher: Jess Whitehead, Cranleigh School

Many of our students form the backbone of the School’s debating and public speaking teams.
