Upper Fifth Work Experience Week
|
2nd - 6th July 2012
Each pupil is required to gain Work Experience at the end of their Upper Fifth year, after their GCSE exams. An introductory briefing for pupils is held in November and correspondence sent to parents. Plans should be discussed well in advance (before and during the Christmas break), as you will need to aim to have finalised arrangements by the end of January.
What kind of Work Experience should I choose?
If you can, your Work Experience should take into consideration any ideas you have for Higher Education, to enable you to learn about a particular profession, for example, or to help you make sensible decisions about VIth Form subject choices. Any work experience looks good in a Personal Statement, and in competitive areas like medical subjects, law and management, the more work experience you are able to do, the better.
If you are unsure about what kind of job you are interested in, have a look at the different job profiles listed on the Government’s NextStep website (LINK TO: nextstep.direct.gov.uk). You could also view the Work Experience Week as an opportunity to discover how you feel about working in an office, for example. Ultimately, gaining experience in any professional environment is highly valuable, even if you decide that ultimately it is not the career for you.
Pupils are encouraged to make full use of the School’s Careers intranet site which will direct them to a wide range of job profile sheets (NB: access reserved to school network users). You can also access a detailed range of job profiles on the Government website: nextstep.direct.gov.uk.
How do I organise my Work Experience?
There are two options:
1. You can arrange your own Work Experience or work-shadowing, either through family contacts or by being proactive and contacting companies yourself. The School strongly recommends this option as it tends to be the only way to find placements in prestigious and popular sectors, and generally produces the most successful experience.
2. You can ask the School’s partner organisation to arrange Work Experience for you. Pupils will be able to send in their preferences regarding the field of work they would like to gain experience in, but they will need to keep an open mind about the kind of work that they are offered. This option does not usually offer work-shadowing opportunities.
In both cases, parents and pupils will need to fill in two forms and return them to the relevant Tutor in January.
A detailed letter is sent to parents in November/December, which gives further information about the Work Experience Week and explains exactly what is required in terms of administration. If you would like a copy of this letter, please contact the Head of Careers (

Where can I do my Work Experience?
You can carry out your Work Experience anywhere you like, either in the UK or occasionally abroad, and be based at either School or home during the week. You should, however, take transportation into account as you may need to use public transport to get to the placement. Work placements arranged via the School’s partner organisation will be in Surrey and should be within commuting distance of Cranleigh.
