Sixth Form
In September 2010 the new OCR Physical Education AS/A2 course was introduced into the Sixth Form. This subject would ideally suit you if you have a strong sporting profile in at least one sport and also have a keen interest in sport in general. A good understanding of GCSE Biology would also be an advantage.
AS
In the first year the AS course is divided into four main teaching areas. You will be required to study:
· Anatomy and Physiology
· Acquiring Movement Skills
· Socio-Cultural issues
At the end of the first year a written paper lasting two hours combining these three components is taken and is worth 60% of the overall mark. The second part of the AS assessment looks at your own personal performance in two differing sports and your ability to analyse and evaluate another person’s sporting prowess. This component makes up the final 40%.
A2
In the second year the A2 course is also split up into various different teaching areas. Here you will be required to study:
· Exercise and Sports Physiology
· Historical Studies
· Psychology of Sport.
A further component again involves your own personal performance and your effectiveness in a sporting environment. You are also asked to evaluate, appreciate and improve performance of someone in one of your chosen sports. In both years the practical component involves your being able to deliver a verbal account when evaluating another participant’s performance.
