2009-2010 DEVELOPMENTS:

Foundationer Bursaries: in keeping with its stated aims, during 2009 the Foundation is helping to fund various Foundationer Bursaries.

Cranleigh Prep Astroturf Pitch: was completed in January 2009 and was officially opened in April by David Westcott, after whom it was named, prior to a fine exhibition match between an Od Cranleighan XI and an Invitation XI boasting curent and past Internationals and Olympians.  The pitch is a truly outstanding addiiton to the Prep School's sporting facilities.

Cricket Pavilion Refurbishment: work started on the ambitious renovations to the Memorial Pavilion in November 2008 in partnership with the OC Society.  It was completed on schedule and officially opened by Roger Knight on OC Day on June 14th in front of a huge crowd.  A Red Arrows fly-past and a fine victory for the OCs in the opening round of the Cricketer Cup provided the day's entertainment.  The stunning improvements have been widely acclaimed by Cranleighans and visitors alike, and the Memorial Pavilion now provides a fitting 'home' for the war memorial to the OCs who lost thie lives in the service of their country during the Wars.

Art & Design Building: This long-awaited project has seen the transformation of the Rhodes Block and the 1913 Science School into a bright and airy facility for Art. This facility now links through to the current Design Department, creating a fabulous new Art & Design Faculty. Phase 1 of this exciting project was completed on time for the start of the Michaelmas term and is now in full use.

Replacement of Chapel Organ & Chapel Renovation: the Chapel is Cranleigh’s most treasured building, and a focal point of school life. The start of its renovation has been made possible by the outstanding generosity of Mr Hamish Ogston, an Old Cranleighan and former Music Scholar, who has donated considerable funds specifically to replace the current, ailing organ with a far more appropriate instrument. Designed by John Mander, one of the world’s leading organ builders, this new organ will be installed in Spring 2010 on a gallery on the west wall, where the original organ was sited in 1870.

We’re hoping that, following this, we will be able to complete the Chapel’s full restoration, recreating the stunning impact of Henry Woodyer’s original architectural masterpiece. The warmth of his candle-lit, red brick interior, with its interwoven biblical scripts, was tragically lost behind white emulsion in the 1960s. Luckily, the east end escaped the paint and, having been restored itself twenty-five or so years ago, still provides a clue as to the extraordinary impact the Chapel must have made in Victorian times.

Following a further significant donation by former master and organ enthusiast Geoffrey Donald, restoration work to the remainder of the brickwork has been undertaken, resulting in the re-emergence of the magnificent original interior.

We very much hope that Hamish’s and Geoffrey's generosity will inspire others to help complete this exciting project.

FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS:

The Foundation has a number of exciting potential projects currently under review: full details will be posted upon confirmation of their planned implementation.
