Oxbridge
A place at Oxford or Cambridge is the objective of some of our brightest pupils. A number enter Cranleigh with Oxbridge ambitions, others emerge as possible candidates during their time here. The acquisition of very good GCSE grades is a first priority, and your selection of Sixth Form courses could well take account of Oxbridge requirements if you see yourself as a likely applicant. Lower Sixth AS Level examinations then provide evidence when the final decision whether to attempt an application is considered.
A separate application procedure runs in parallel with the UCAS structure. Early in their Upper Sixth year, Oxbridge candidates submit an application form to a college at either of the universities, and examples of their written work may also be required. If you apply, you can expect to be called for interview (and possibly for written tests) in December, after which you may receive, during the Christmas holidays or just after, the offer of a place dependent upon A2 grades (and sometimes on extra exams in particular subjects specified by the university).
You can also apply successfully after A Levels - in some cases even after an earlier rejection. Like other candidates, you can expect to be interviewed in December, and should arrange to be easily contactable during the preceding three months.
We keep closely in touch with colleges and with Old Cranleighans in residence there; members of the Lower Sixth visit colleges and university departments. Appropriate teaching and interview practice is provided.
This year 12 out of 26 applicants received offers.
