Cubitt is a House of 100 boys (boarders and day boys) and is situated in an attractive, convenient location at the front of the school, on the edge of the South Field. It enjoys magnificent views over the South field and sports fields and from 2006 to 2008 was extended and fully refurbished to a high standard. As well as a new wing, a new Housemaster’s House and a new front entrance, a wonderful House sculpture was made by Cubitt pupils, which sits proudly in the newly-created Quad.
East
East House is located right at the heart of the School, overlooking the Quad to one side and South Field to the front. A rabbit-warren of hidden staircases and split-level rooms, the House sometimes has the feel of a Hogwarts set: outsiders stray into the maze of corridors at their own risk! It is one of the oldest areas in the School and has housed boarders since the earliest days of the School, giving the boys in East a real sense of being at the centre of School life. Despite its long history, regular refurbishments have created a light, modern ambience and its imaginative design has given the House a unique character, of which the boys are immensely proud.
Loveday
Loveday House was built in 1981: the planning took two years and the current design took effect owing to the development team consulting widely with 20-30 other independent school Housemasters, asking them what worked well and what didn’t in their own Houses. Loveday, centred around a large, open-air Quad (the Wilson Quad, named after the current Head of the Prep School), was the result. The House has many unique features, but key to its success is its atmosphere: it feels like an extension of a family home, with a natural integration of both day boys and boarders. There is a friendly, intimate feel, thanks partly to the architecture but also due to the fact that Loveday is founded on an ‘open door’ policy, welcoming all people who come to the House, whether they are attached or just visiting, equally.
North
Over the last 40 years North House has increased in size thanks to two major extensions; based on three levels, it is now the largest House in area. In the junior years, all day boys, where possible, have desks in boarders’ rooms, thus reinforcing integration within the House. All rooms are light and airy: the individual Upper VIth rooms in particular are very spacious, while one of the LVth rooms has been affectionately dubbed ‘The Penthouse’, thanks to the stunning views it offers over the School grounds and distant hills. We have a separate TV room and games room, with Matron’s room (an ever-popular hub) situated right in the middle of the House. A recently added outdoor paving area with benches provides the perfect summertime alternative – complemented by the Housemaster’s barbecue, which is found close to the House and ‘fired-up’ on many an occasion.
South
South House is part of the main building of the School and is situated at the end of the Connaught Block, which means that South girls have the advantage of not getting wet when they are going to meals! Our accommodation - which has plenty of character - has been converted from two separate boys’ Houses and part of the Geography Department and was brought together under one roof so that all 100 or so girls are accommodated within the same building.
West
West House was purpose-built in 2001 to accommodate both boarders and day girls. It is a modern, light airy building with plenty of character and an open feel to it, which means you never realise quite how many girls are roaming its corridors! We are lucky enough to have our own garden area which comes into its own in the Summer Term and offers the opportunity not only to light the BBQ when occasion (and the English weather) allows, but also an outdoor space to perform our informal summer music concerts, a bi-annual feature for all Houses.
