300Recent Old Cranleighans, Angus McConnell-Wood and Tom Taylor, visited the Classics Society last week to talk about the Persian Wars. Angus opened the lecture by explaining the tactical advantages and disadvantages of both the Persian and Greek armies, and therefore how the Greeks were able to eventually prevail over their much more powerful enemies. Tom  then described the political situation in Athens at the time of the wars, which gave us an interesting insight into how the ‘home front’ was controlled in Athens.

The lecture was extremely well attended by pupils, drawing in even those who do not formally study Classics. Those who went, left armed with a great deal of interesting information, and knowledge about the origins of the film ‘300’.
