Few, if any, would have predicted the conditions that this year’s Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race would throw at those who took on what is described as the ‘canoeists’ Everest’. Searing heat, congested waterways and a near-stationary Thames all combined to make 2011’s race one of the most challenging on record.
Spread over four days, this 125-mile race makes demands on all involved. Complex logistics are needed to keep the paddlers fed and watered by their support teams, made all the more taxing by the heavy Easter weekend crowds. The paddlers suffered heat exhaustion, dehydration and heavily blistered hands.
Times were, inevitably, slower than in some previous years, following six weeks of virtually no rain. However, the ten Cranleigh pairs all finished well up the rankings, with the boys’ team (Ben Allon-Smith & Chris Lehrter, Will Larwood & Louis Charlton, Ross Preston & Harry Ricks) gaining fourth place overall and the girls’ team (Georgia Watson & Lizzie Wait, Tori Prew & Chrissie Hoolahan) coming third in their completion . The Cranleigh paddlers can be immensely proud of their achievement and remain, for the fourth year running, the most successful school or club to enter both a boys’ and girls’ team.
