The swimming at Cranleigh has improved dramatically over the last couple of years, with swimmers receiving medals at national events such as the Bath cup and representing both the county and the region school teams.
Centrally located, our 25m four-lane indoor pool is put to full use throughout the year. Next to the indoor pool is a six-lane 33m outdoor pool, which is heated throughout the Summer term. During the Michaelmas term the School swimming team competes in the county school competitions, Division 11 trials (the selection of Surrey and Kent’s best swimmers to go to schools’ nationals) and national schools competitions. In the Summer term, the swimming teams compete weekly in inter-school galas, with the boys and girls training together midweek. During the Lent term the School enters the Independent Schools Bath Cup at Whitgift, Croydon where we have had excellent results in the past few years and look strong for this year’s championships.
Some pupils take advantage of the life-guarding courses that are available once or twice each year, obtaining a qualification that can earn them some extra pocket-money in holidays, or after they leave school. Life-saving courses are also available as part of the activity programme. The pupils are also offered swimming teacher courses in the holidays.
Senior Coach:
David Hailey is no stranger to the pool, himself being an ex-national and Speedo grand prix circuit swimmer. He has represented clubs and regions up to both national and international competitions, swam in an Olympics trials final at the age of only 17, is one of the youngest ASA Coaches in the country and has also graduated with an BSc honours degree in sports science.
Alongside his role at Cranleigh, David has been instrumental in setting up one of the region’s most highly regarded swim schools and has recently expanded this to the pool at Cranleigh School on Saturday mornings. He is also currently the Assistant Head Coach at Cranleigh Swimming Club, coaching swimmers up to and including national level.
