During recent seasons the footballers at Cranleigh have developed a winning mentality. The team in 2007 remained unbeaten and the squad in 2009 won every match up until the final week of term. The standard of pitch play continues to rise and recent sides have been fantastic to watch.
The main season takes place in the Lent Term. All footballers from the top three year groups play together, but players are divided into ‘scratches’ for training purposes. The highest two scratches are selected on ability and the lower scratches are divided by year group, so Upper Fifth play together and Sixth Form together.
1st scratch: this comprises players from the 1st and 2nd XI teams and training takes place on St Andrew’s 1. Keith Scott, an ex-premiership player and professional coach, takes fortnightly drills, skills and tactical sessions that compliment the regular Tuesday/Thursday training programme.
2nd scratch:this contains the core players for the 3rd and 4th XI teams (St Andrew’s 2).
3rd scratch: this includes the remainder of the Sixth Form footballers (St Andrew’s 3).
4th & 5th scratches: these contain the remainder of the Upper Fifth footballers (sessions on Lowers).
Training takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3.15 – 4.45pm and matches take place on Saturdays (normally 2.30pm kick-off).
All players in scratches two to five take part in the highly popular “Fantasy Leagues”, a competition organised and overseen by RAC. This follows a league format, starting in week four of the Lent Term and stretching over five or six rounds.
On Monday evenings, an inter-House football league is organized for Sixth Formers in the Michaelmas Term. There are both boys’ and girls’ competitions, played on the astroturf under floodlights.
In the past and when demand arises, the senior girls have participated in regular Wednesday afternoon sessions in the Lent Term and occasionally inter-school matches are organised.
