Clubs, Societies & Activities

Our aim at Cranleigh is not just to provide academic opportunity but also to offer a broad extra-curricular programme. Success in other activities and sports will often lead to academic success, and we aim to foster this whenever possible. There are daily activity slots throughout the week, designed particularly to ensure that there is enough protected time for the creative and performing arts, but also to present all sorts of opportunities to try extra sports and an extraordinary range of other activities.

Skill-Building Activities

Skill-building activities play a key role in the development of the diverse skills associated with Cranleigh pupils. They include: Academic competitions, debating, public speaking and quizzes, shooting, canoeing, trampolining, tech. theatre, dance and cooking.

Quotations

“Being involved in the National Youth Parliament Competition was amazing. Preparing the speeches, making the film and then visiting Parliament itself after we won was brilliant!”

“You may think that there isn’t enough space in the Cranleigh pool but somehow there is, and, anyway, everyone who does canoeing always ends up with great control over the boat.”

Academic Interest Clubs

Academic Interest Clubs allow pupils with a wider interest in an area to explore further beyond and around the curriculum. We currently have such diverse interest clubs as Politics and Economics, Italian Language and Culture, Classics, Greek, Military History and an Einstein Club for the scientists. These clubs also provide an outlet for the VIth Form to share their enthusiasm for and love of their subjects with Lower School pupils.

Quotations

“Running an Academic Club puts you on the other side of the fence. It’s a real challenge working out interesting activities but so rewarding when the group has a great hour. ”

Creative Activities

Creative activities include artDT, framing, craft and jewellery-making. These extra sessions give pupils a chance to produce work of an exceptionally high standard, and really let their creative juices flow.

Quotations

“The art activity is a great way to finish up some coursework or just bring out your creative side. Just as with art lessons themselves you can choose from a number of different areas, so there is something to suit everyone.”

“DT is always popular. You can work on an electronics kit, or build something you have wanted for ages and at a fraction of the cost of buying it.”

“Framing is a different and very popular activity in which you make professional-looking picture frames.”

“Tech. theatre is a great way to be a part of a School play if you are not the acting type. You learn how all the important electronics work that makes a good play great.”

“The things that have been made in this activity are amazing. You could make anything from a modern art bench to a ‘state-of-the-art’ sledge.”

Sport Activities

Sport activities include basketball, golf, hockey skills, indoor football, riding, water polo, fives, squash, swimming, tennis and badminton. Also on offer is a slightly more eclectic choice with Aussie rules football and ‘ultimate frisbee’. Such a wide range of sporting activities gives all pupils the chance to shine.

Quotations

“With such a great sports facility as the Trevor Abbott Sports Centre it seems a shame to let it go to waste, and by playing badminton you definitely don’t do that”.

“Basketball, the name says it all. With coaching and matches your game improves and you don’t get bored: great for beginners and experts alike.”

“I just love my indoor football session on Monday. It’s a great start to the week!"

Music Activities

Music activities include the orchestra, saxophone quartet, clarinet ensemble, concert band, string orchestra, symphonic wind band, chapel brass and the Big Band. There is also the opportunity to do some private music practice. With music at such a high standard at Cranleigh, it is only natural that there are so many music activities available.

Quotations

“Big Band is like a jazz band. It is definitely one of the most popular bands to see and hear when it performs, and the only way you can be part of it is by doing this activity.”

“Chapel Brass is the only activity that lets you play the best hymns and be a major part of services such as the Remembrance Service."

“If you play the clarinet and want to improve your playing then you must join the Clarinet Ensemble!”

“If you like music and want to play more concerts then you should join the Concert Band.”

“Individual Music Practice gives you time to brush up on a scale or finish the last bit of a piece before your next music lesson.”
