What is your favourite city that you have passed through (so far)? (Class 3B, Cranleigh Prep School)

Kampala... do you know where that is?

What's the coolest thing you've seen on your trip so far? (Orianne, Woodford Green)

The coolest natural feature I have seen so far has been the Victoria Falls on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe.  This is where the Zambezi River drops over the edge of a huge cliff face. It is known as Mosi-au-tunya which means “The Smoke That Thunders” which is a great name for it – the spray of the water looks like smoke and the noise of the water is like a thunderstorm.

However the coolest human event I have been part of is helping a group of children and their teachers in Zambia to build their own classrooms. The children there value their education so much that they help carry bricks and shovel sand in order to build their own school!

Where do you sleep at night? (Pedro, Wanstead)

I normally sleep in my tent which I carry with me.  It is very lightweight and has aluminium poles. I have a small ground mat to protect my back from the hard ground. Sometimes it is very cold at night. Occasionally I will be lucky enough that someone will offer me a comfortable bed for the night and then I have a really good night’s sleep!

How much do you cycle in a day? (Ella, Wanstead)

How much I cycle tends to vary from 60 to 190kms. On average about 100kms per day, but I will cycle less as it gets hotter!

What are you looking forward to seeing the most? (Joseph, Wanstead)

I am looking forward to seeing lions the most, as long as I see them first and they don’t eat me for lunch!

Do you ever get tired of cycling? (Anna, Wanstead)

Yes I do! So I try to have one day’s break from cycling every week.

How do you survive in the heat? (Jack, Leytonstone)

The first rule is to drink plenty of water, but it is also important to eat enough food, with the right amounts of salts and sugars in them.  Water is heavy to carry and it can be difficult to carry enough on board the bike for a long hot day’s cycling.

What have you been eating? (Christopher, Leytonstone)

As much food as possible! I get very hungry riding the bike so I eat whatever I can. However it can be hard to carry food with me and some parts of Africa food is not so easily available, especially where they are suffering from famine or drought. I tend to eat pasta and rice for carbohydrates plus some chicken or tuna for protein, as well as sugary and salty foods to replace what I have lost during the day.

How long will it take you to cycle 10,000km? (Vincent, Forest Gate)

It will take me at least 6 months to cycle that distance. It depends what happens along the way and if I have problems or good luck! I may have to take alternative, longer routes if there are problems on the road ahead but I hope there won’t be!
