School Information

Cranleigh is a community whose principal aim is to offer to all its pupils a range of opportunities to enable them to achieve to the best of their ability within a framework of shared values and standards. The School is independent and the Head is a member of the Headmasters’ Conference. Cranleigh’s two hundred and forty-acre site is situated eight miles from Guildford, near to a large village and within 45 minutes of London. There are about 400 boys and 200 girls in the School with a Sixth Form of about 250. Most 13 + entrants to Cranleigh remain at the School for the full five years and achieve passes in three subjects at A Level. The great majority of all leavers go on to their first choice universities.

Part of the School’s style is an easy and informal relationship and mutual respect between Common Room and members of the School (there is a pupil:teacher ratio of about eight to one). Cranleighans are, as a result, supportive of each other and at ease with adults. All members of Common Room are involved in the tutorial programme and in the supervision of extra-curricular activities. This is essential in providing the all-round experience the School offers the pupils.

The School is essentially a boarding community: boys and girls, boarders and day pupils play a full part in the daily activities of the Houses, though all members of the School eat together in a central self-service Dining Hall. The latest in a line of major building projects, the Emms Centre, housing Modern Languages, Science and Mathematics Departments was completed at the end of 2008. Work on  phase one of a new Art and Design Centre has recently been completed.

Conditions for Members of Common Room

The School’s policy is to provide accommodation for any teaching staff who require it.  Salaries are based on Cranleigh pay scales.  Scales for staff living in their own accommodation are adjusted accordingly.

Posts at Cranleigh are pensionable under the Teachers’ Superannuation Scheme.  Private health care and long-term sickness insurance are currently available if required.  Generous fee concessions are available for children of members of teaching staff attending Cranleigh School and Cranleigh Preparatory School.
