On Friday 12 members of Cranleigh’s swim team headed to the London Aquatics Centre, home of the London 2012 Olympic Games, to compete in the annual Bath Cup and Otter Medley Championships.
Between them the girls’ and boys’ teams brought home three bronze medals and one silver – a record for the School in this historic competition.
The day started with the girls 4x50m Freestyle relay and after a strong heat performance from PJ Cunningham, Lotty Cunningham, Annie Norton and Fabi Kohler, placed Cranleigh in 4th position into the final. Girls’ Captain, Emma Grainger came into the team and with everyone improving on their heat time, moved up and claimed the bronze medal.
The team of Rafe Scott, Nick Phillips, George Gosling, and Angus Burns swam a good heat in the boys’ 4x100m Freestyle relay but found themselves in sixth position going into the final. Up against it, the four boys showed their spirit, attacked the race from the beginning and claimed the bronze medal.
This gave the team a huge lift going into the afternoon session and the Medley relay events. The girls swam well in the heats to claim 4th seed for the final but they all knew they were capable of going faster. Cranleigh were placing 3rd after the first three legs and after a stunning performance by Emma Grainger on the Freestyle leg, Cranleigh overtook Culford and out-touched them by 0:11, claiming the silver medal.
The boys’ Medley relay closed the day and the Cranleigh team knew they were in line for something special; if the boys placed in the top 3, it would be the first time Cranleigh would have claimed medals in all four races at the Bath Cup. The team of Rafe Scott, George Gosling, Max FitzGerald, and Angus Burns stormed home, moving from 4th seed, to 3rd place and taking the bronze medal.
The team worked incredibly hard and for three of the boys it was their last chance at this competition so it was nice for them to go out with something special. They’ve done themselves and the school very proud indeed.
