The under 14 hockey team had a day to remember at Lee Valley, the home of England Hockey, earlier this week, coming home with a silver medal.
Drawn in a “pool of death”, they started with a really tough game against Dean Close; their team included their star who is already playing for England under 16s. The first half was as tough as expected and we didn’t manage to get in their circle once in the whole half. Having gone in 0-0 at half-time, we came out and scored two unanswered second-half goals to record a great win to start with.
0-1 down to Greshams at half-time put us under pressure, but two more goals in the second half gave us another hard-earned win. The final pool game saw us against the traditionally strong Repton. Having gone one up, Repton equalised, but we scored two further goals to top the pool with three wins out of three.
So to the Final against our local rivals Whitgift, who, having drawn with QEGS, only scraped through on a better goal difference of one over their northern opponents. Having lost to them in the block
fixture and beaten them in the South final, we knew it was going to be a close affair and so it proved. It was extremely fast and the standard of skills on display was exceptional. We got a short corner early on and the move finished with a deflection that their keeper just managed to save. They had a couple of short corners but we defended well and half-time came with no goals.
The game was decided by a fantastic reverse stick shot to put Whitgift one up, and as we were pushing forward with an extra attacker in order to get an equaliser in the final few minutes, they scored a stunning individual goal from the halfway line on the break. Two goals worthy of winning a national final, but a fantastic performance by our squad, half of whom were playing in the Bs last season and all of whom should be very proud of just how dramatically they have improved since Christmas.
