As with so many sports, the cricket season does not start and end in the Summer term. Over the Easter break it was great to see many Cranleighans – both current and former – playing at such high levels. Tom Lawes toured South Africa with the Surrey Academy, and he and George Ealham have been involved with the Surrey Academy this summer. Tom Ealham and Yousef Majid have been playing for their respective counties, Kent and Berkshire. It has also been fantastic to follow three Old Cranleighans, Michael Burgess (North 2012), Ollie Pope (Loveday 2016) and Stuart Meaker (North 2007) playing first class cricket this summer and having such huge impacts.
In School the season so far has been pleasing. We unfortunately lost a third of our fixtures to bad weather in the first half of term, but we have still seen some excellent victories for all sides. The 1st XI had a great win over Tonbridge and the U15 A’s have only lost to one school, beating both Wellington and Tonbridge along the way. The greatest achievement, however, has been the ability for us to regularly put out 11 sides each week, often more than schools with double our numbers are able to mobilise.
The School are benefiting from recent 1st XI leavers, Lewis Bedford (Cubitt 2017) and Ed Tristem (North 2017) helping to coach the Prep School and U14 and U15 age groups this summer. It is good to also see so many Old Cranleighans play Surrey Premier League cricket and this bodes very well for the OC Cricketer Cup team.
