The Royal Windsor Horse Show is always a great occasion but this year it was the inaugural celebration event for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, so to be a part of it was even more special than usual.
For the first time we were able to enter Her Majesty the Queen’s Plate for Services Teams, as three of our riders are also members of our CCF: Cdt Cpl Tom S.; Cdt LCpl Megan T. and Cdt Madeleine R. What a memorable occasion it was as we joined teams representing the Army, Navy, Police (including the Abu Dhabi Force) and RAF as well as those riding for the King’s Troops Horse Artillery, the Household Cavalry, the Defence Animal Training Regiment, the Bahrain Defence Force, and the Ministry of Interior (Bahrain). Two other schools were represented by their cadets, Pangbourne College and The Royal Hospital School.
It is a two round competition which also involves a parade of teams through the Castle Arena before the jump off for the top six teams after round one. Cdt Cpl Tom S. led our salute to the Royal Box during the parade as all three riders enjoyed what was a memorable occasion. It was then Megan who rode back into the Castle Arena to compete in the jump off for us, holding her nerve to post a second clear round of the day in front of packed crowds whose cheering raised the roof every time a rider cleared the last fence. We started the jump off in fourth place, having carried our eight faults from the first round, but finished in third after other teams faulted, behind two Army teams. Megan’s clear in the first round meant she finished fourth individually in the Under 25 section and Madeleine also posted a clear which meant she finished just behind her in fifth. These were fantastic results that were the icing on the cake of a fantastic day.
On Sunday Issy H. represented Area 11 in the Pony Club Show Jumping Competition, riding a lovely round in front of a packed Frogmore Arena, to just knock the final fence in the first round. However, her sensible course walk meant that she posted the fastest time in the first round and with only seven riders going clear to contest the jump off, Issy picked up the eighth prize.
