Lower Sixth Form (year 12) artists were excited to go on a gallery trip for the first time in over a year. In the morning, we visited The Royal Academy of Arts exhibition of painter Michael Armitage. His dramatic, bold and ambitious figurative work engaged the students who worked hard to sketch and make notes in a desire to understand what they were seeing.

After a lunch break we moved to Tate Britain and the suite of galleries on modern and contemporary British art. The varied work, in style, media and ideas allowed for different students’ interests. As the students look to get going on their own personal ideas over the summer and into next year the trip enabled them to look beyond school art and be inspired by the ambition and scope of the art world beyond Cranleigh.
