Our two Sixth Form groups each had a day in London, with the Lower Sixth visiting the William Kentridge Exhibition at the Royal Academy and then Tate Britain, while Upper Sixth visited the Victoria and Albert Museum followed by two exhibitions at the Serpentine Gallery.
The William Kentridge show at the Royal Academy was show-stopping with 17 galleries full of varied, exciting and dramatic printmaking, sculpture, animation, theatre and drawing. Our Lower Sixth were suitably overawed! For the Upper Sixth, the two serpentine exhibitions – In the South gallery work by Sudenese painter Kamala Ibrahim Ishag and in the North gallery the French based sculptor Barbara Chase-Riboud – was calmer and more measured, allowing students time to contemplate quite different pieces.
The V&A is always an amazing visit with seven miles of gallery space allowing students to find a feast of visual resources. Cranleighians on both trips worked hard to respond to the work and make connections to their developing studio practice.
