During the last week of term, we hosted our annual Eco Week with an array of diverse, engaging and educational events.

The whole week was Zero Waste Week, where each member of our community was encouraged to produce zero waste to draw attention to unnecessary waste in our every day lives. We were asked “what can you do to help?”. From turning off the heating (it helped that it was 19 degrees) to not printing at all and only taking what we would eat at mealtimes everyone has a part to play.

Another theme across the whole week was two sustainability competitions: Creative Response – “What nature means to me” and a Chemistry essay – “What is the role of Chemistry in causing/solving the current environment crisis?”.  The aim of these competitions was to link academic work to the real world – a great way to think beyond the test.

The week kicked off on Saturday 19th March with an Eco Week Assembly led by our Eco Prefects Rosie S. and Kasim S. detailing what we have already achieved as a School and where we can/plan to go next encouraging everyone to get involved to make a difference.

On Monday 21st our pupils learned about the UN’s sustainable development goals in PSHE and many attended an online event hosted by UK Schools Sustainability Network (UKSSN) and Surrey Environmental Action Schools (SEAS), Cranleigh is a member of both, on tackling Eco Anxiety with action, nature and creativity. Monday also saw the first of our Nature Mindfulness Walks and Stargazing with Mr Rob Hardy.

On Tuesday we held a screening, complete with popcorn, of the documentary film The Gamechangers. The film focuses on the benefits of a plant-based diet for elite athletes and proved a popular talking point for our pupils.

Our annual charity second hand clothes sale took place on Wednesday complete with additional activities such as chilli seed planting and a Beyond Ourselves eco products stall. The sale was hugely popular with our pupils.

Thursday’s Mufti Day provided the perfect opportunity for everyone to show off their new to them second hand clothes purchased at the sale the day before. The day started with an Eco Chapel service where Rev. Jacob Harrison provided a faith-based perspective on our stewardship of the planet. That afternoon we joined forces with Cranleigh Prep School to help the Prep pupils understand and measure the impacts of traffic pollution on our health lead by Mr Phil Leamon.

Finally, we ended the week, and the Lent term, with a whole School Assembly where, following a month long Terracycle competition, we found out which house won the coveted Golden Bin! The winner was…EAST!
