The annual “Encore” holds a special place in the performance year – a celebration of success and the very finest musical talent across the whole 7-18 Cranleigh Music structure with an atmosphere of jollity and celebration.

As usual, all performers were winners of their classes in the Helen Wareham Competition or Prep School Music Competition. A strong showing from all the Prep School performers gave an exciting foretaste of some of the great talent to be coming over to Cranleigh in the next two years. For the Senior School, the five Junior and five Senior winners all showed the polished and highly accomplished musicianship we have come to expect from these talented performers. From such a uniformly accomplished event it would be wrong to highlight particular individuals, so I won’t.

However, it would be equally wrong not to mention the UVI Form performers for whom this represented their last recital at Cranleigh. Deescha Chandrasma’s beautiful and understated cello playing has always been a joy to listen to and her performance of Cassado’s Requiebros was a true highlight of the evening. Rosie Forster only joined Cranleigh in the Sixth Form but immediately threw herself into the musical life of the school, singing the role of Mme Thenardier in last year’s Les Miserables, and as a prominent vocal soloist. Her performance of Jerome Kern’s Can’t help lovin’ that man o’ mine was wonderfully characterised and heartfelt. The honour of  the Headmaster’s Invitation performance was given this year to Bethany Porter (recorder) and Krzysztof Widera (harpsichord) working beautifully together and blending exquisitely in the warm acoustic of the Emms Centre.

We would like to say a very big thank you to all the UVI musicians for their huge contribution over their years at Cranleigh and wish them every success for the future.
