We left The Castle Lodge at 8.30 to travel to Kitwe where we were to be based for the rest of our trip. We dropped our stuff off at The Town House and then headed off to Kawama School to be greeted by the Independence Day celebrations. We couldn’t have expected more of a welcoming arrival than what we received; we could hear the children’s cheers as we were coming up the drive of the school.

Once we had settled down in the main hall of the school, a passionate prayer set the precedent for the rest of the celebration, which contained an assortment of songs and dances. A break dance routine from children as young as five left us impressed as we realised our distinct lack of talent in this department.

We were taken back by the sheer patriotism of all of the Zambians; a reoccurring theme so far from our trip where we have seen pictures of the President Edgar Lungu on the front of billboards, t-shirts and dresses.

After the festivities died down we left the hall to more welcoming vibes where we were able to properly meet the teachers and children of Kawama.

We returned to the Town House to sort out donations for the clothes sale, taking place the following afternoon at the school. We even managed to watch the Rugby World Cup and West Ham beating Chelsea as a bit of down time before another busy day tomorrow.
