Today was another early start for our last day at Kawama School. Half of the group was left to go to the local market to source a good product with the best Zambian ‘back-story’ as part of the “10 Kwacha Challenge”. The other half helped grades 3 and 4 (roughly ages 8-11) with reading, where we were all surprised by the variety of ability within the grades. Whilst serving the school lunches, we had a reality check as to how little food they live off. For many of the children this is their only meal of the day consisting of nshima, small pieces of eggplant, and a segment of sausage. Many of us found that we were still hungry at the end, and thus we were very sympathetic of their situation they were born into, as so often we take our Cranleigh life for granted. In the afternoon, one of the groups filmed some clips to promote Beyond Ourselves on social media. Story time was probably one of our favourite activities of the week. Group A read classic stories including ‘The Gruffalo’ and ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’. We also sung ‘Five Speckled Frogs’ and ‘The Animals Came Two by Two’. The highlight has got to be ‘Going on a Bear Hunt’ around the school playground, where it was great to see the excitement and involvement of each of the 40 children (and Cranleigh students).

At the end of the day, it was time to say our thanks and goodbyes to all at Kawama. Indeed this was a particularly emotional occasion as we all signed a goodbye shirt for Head Teacher Mary. Miss Sturdee gave a very touching speech evoking the end of her past four visits to Kawama as part of Beyond Cranleigh. It was very hard to say goodbye to the children in particular. This evening we will be presenting the items bought as part of the “10 Kwacha Challenge”, and tomorrow we will be leaving to start our journey home.
