What is Modern Boarding?

When considering Boarding for your child it is important to ask as many questions as possible. We recognise that moving to boarding is a big decision for a family to make and may be a significant change from prep school life. On October 10th 2018, parents and prep schools joined us for an evening which was designed to answer all questions about this important decision, and explored what boarding can offer to their children, whether they are considering Cranleigh or another boarding school. Janette Wallis

Senior Editor at The Good Schools Guide

Janette Wallis is a senior editor of The Good Schools Guide and advises parents around the world on UK school choice. She writes regularly about schools and education and is frequently quoted in the national press on education issues. She has 12 years’ experience with The Good Schools Guide Education Consultants helping families find the very best schools for their children. Janette previously wrote for The Economist and The Financial Times, held the education brief for the Diplomatic Service Families Association and has been a school governor. She has four children of her own.

Neil Brooks

Headmaster, Cranleigh Preparatory School

Neil began his twenty year career in education as a Housemaster at Cothill House. During his ten years at Cothill he raised the school to an enviable position as a prominent and popular boarding choice. Afterwards he helped to set up other initiatives within the Cothill Trust, covering eight preparatory schools. He went on to work with the Natural History Museum to deliver science courses combined with boarding experiences for inner-London children and briefly became Principal of the Trust, before joining Fulham Prep Schools as Principal. He joined Cranleigh Preparatory School as Headmaster in September 2018.

Jan Shilling, Education Consultant

former Independent Schools Council and British Boarding Schools Network

Jan’s association with boarding schools  has, in her words, been “lengthy and varied”. From hands-on and Director level marketing and admissions positions in several very different GSA, HMC and IAPS boarding schools, she took on major strategic roles within the Independent Schools Council, advising member schools and educational organisations on matters of policy, strategy and recruitment both in the UK and abroad. More recently she was Head of Strategy and Development with the British Boarding Schools Network. Jan now acts for schools and educational organisations as a consultant.

Martin Reader

Chair of the Boarding Schools Association

Martin is Headmaster at Cranleigh School and is currently Chair of the Boarding Schools’ Association. He also serves on the Professional Development Committee of the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference. He was educated at University College, Oxford, where he was an Exhibitioner in English and English Literature. He continued at Oxford reading for an MPhil in English Studies (1100-1500). He also has an MBA in School Leadership International from Hull University.
