Cranleigh Ski Team
Cranleigh Ski team has gone from strength to strength since its humble beginnings in 2013. The team is open to all skiers who have sufficient experience to develop their skiing technique to race competitively.
Cranleigh runs an intensive training week in the Easter holidays in Pampeago, Italy, where potential team members are put through their paces on the perfectly groomed slopes in the spring Italian sunshine.
The basics of racing are taught by Italian federation race instructors with the week culminating in the annual ‘Cranleigh Ski Championship’ where all skiers race in a timed, Slalom and GS runs adhering to FiS rules. The trip is open to all age groups but the majority come from the Fourth Form and Lower Fifth. This is the main selection process for the team for the following season.
The minimum standards for joining the team training trip to Italy are:
- At least 8-10 weeks ski experience on snow
- Ability to ski comfortably on a red run at speed, under control
- Control speed and line on a black slope
The team is then selected to represent the school and compete in numerous competitions against other schools. Depending on the ability of the team, conditions and enthusiasm of parents we would aim to attend some, if not all of the following events; ISA indoor championships, ISSSC championship in Les Deux Alpes, Canada Cup in Jasper to name but a few.
As the team matures we will hopefully be able to attend the British School boy and School girl championships and send individuals to British ski team events. In the future we will offer dry slope training in Aldershot and gate training in Hemel Hempstead snow centre. Most of the race kit is supplied but as racers progress they will require their own equipment to be able to compete at the highest level.
