We offer riding on site as part of our extra-curricular and games programme in both the Prep and Senior School, but most who ride take part in a full range of other sports and activities too. Over the last 10 years Cranleigh has developed a strong tradition for riding, and the Equestrian Team has one of the best competition records of any school in the country.

Riding is not only available to those who bring their horse to school; we have our own ponies for use in lessons and we are a Pony Club Linked Centre.

Currently we have in the region of 40 boys and girls from both the Prep and Senior School who enjoy the opportunity to ride. Amongst the youngest and newest of these are some complete beginners. We then cover the whole range of abilities up to riders who are competing at International level.

Pupils can have their ponies brought to School just for lessons or the ponies can stay at School on livery or flexi-livery, which is available both during term time and school holidays. Details and costs of part-livery can be obtained from the Equestrian Centre Manager (see below for contacts).

Training

Our team of instructors works with individuals to tailor their riding programme to their specific needs at any given time of the year and the expert tuition offered helps in developing each rider’s potential to the full, whether they are potential GB riders or just wanting to enjoy low-level participation.

Riders with their own ponies at School can expect to ride four or five times a week and two of these sessions would be a formal lesson.

Charges for riding lessons are added to the termly fee invoice and as of September 2020 these are:

Non-pony owners: £200 per term (for one lesson a week).

Pony owners: £225 per term (for two lessons per week) or £150 per term (for one lesson per week).

Facilities

Our facilities include 30 stables, over 60 acres of grazing and riding land, a 60 by 30 metre floodlit all-weather arena and a 20 by 40 metre (semi-lit) all-weather arena. We have a full course of show jumps and arena eventing jumps.

Cranleigh School is a member of the National Schools Equestrian Association and our riders regularly compete in all disciplines: dressage, show jumping, eventing, eventers challenge and jumping with style (arena eventing). We support our grassroots riders as much as our more experienced riders, as they start their riding journey.

Since the inception of the NSEA National Schools’ Championships we have won numerous National titles.

Our team placings at all levels have made us one of the most successful riding schools in the South East region as well as nationally.

In addition to NSEA competitions, each year we take part in the All England Schools’ Show Jumping at Hickstead, and in the Stonar ISODE where our riders have been consistently placed in both team and individual competitions at all levels. We are also fully supportive of riders pursuing ambitions outside of the schools’ arena, allowing them time to compete in British Eventing, British Dressage or British Show Jumping competitions
