Remembrance Day & Service

Remembrance Day is always a poignant time in the school calendar as we join together to pay our respects to the fallen.

Remembrance Day is always a poignant time in the school calendar as we join together to pay our respects to the fallen.

Cranleigh Prep musicians joined forces with members of the Senior School Wind Band to provide music for the Cranleigh Village Remembrance Service on Sunday 9th November. The service was attended by hundreds of people with representatives from local churches, Guide and Scout groups, Cranleigh School CCF and honoured veterans. Our young musicians were mature and respectful, playing hymns and incidental music during the laying of the wreaths. Well done to Joshua D, Alex F, Daisy K, Laura L, Toby M, Harvey P-N, Ems S, Leonie S, Olivia S and Tom W for their involvement in such an important community event.

On Remembrance Day, the whole school joined together in the beautiful Prep School Chapel, for a reflective service led by our school Chaplain, Revd Harrison. The Chapel Choir processed in, wearing their traditional red gowns, before leading the school in the hymn ‘Abide With Me.’

Mr Newman began by reading the famous poem by John McCrae ‘In Flanders Fields’ and newly appointed Head Boy and Head Girl (Rupert L and Honor B) read the lesson.

After Revd Harrison’s thought-provoking sermon, the Chapel Choir sang Willcock’s anthem ‘Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace’. The choir, directed by Mrs Williams, sang beautifully and solos were enjoyed by George S and Hugo B. The Last Post was played by Year 7 trombonist Joshua D, whose calm and confident approach delivered a faultless performance that most seasoned professionals would have been proud of. The final hymn ‘I Vow to Thee My Country’ was sung with gusto before the school really raised the roof with two verses of the National Anthem.

Thank you to all involved in making this such a special service.
