The trip has been a fantastic opportunity for the children to build their resilience by stepping out of their comfort zones, making their own choices and strengthening their teamwork skills. A highlight for many was the coasteering session, where every pupil showed tremendous bravery by tackling the rugged coastline and leaping into the sea. Despite some initial nerves, everyone rose to the challenge and supported each other with enthusiasm and encouragement. A surprise visit from Ron the Seal added to the fun and boosted spirits even further! The group also enjoyed a full day at the beach, making the most of the sunshine with jumbo paddle boards, obstacle courses, team games and fun in the water. The day was rounded off with a classic seaside fish and chip supper and a very successful crabbing session, much to the delight of all involved. The weather has been mostly kind, with the sun shining on our adventures. It’s been a memorable and rewarding experience for everyone, and while we’ve loved every moment, we are now looking forward to returning home on Friday. --- - Published: 2025-06-10 - Modified: 2025-06-10 - URL: https://www.cranleigh.org/prep/2025/06/10/iaps-swimming-finals-at-the-london-aquatic-centre/ - Categories: Swimming On Saturday the CPS IAPS swimming qualifiers came together at the prestigious London Aquatic Centre host to the 2012 Olympics and Paralympic games, home for the many international swimming competitions and the 2025 finals venue for IAPS. This year IAPS competition welcomed 292 schools nationally with 5,000 students competing for the top ranked 20 places at the finals. IAPS is one of the most contested swimming arenas with CPS competing against many top swimming schools in the country so we are very proud of the team's achievements. The morning session started with the Girls events and Jessie H who is young to compete in the U10 50 meters Butterfly category, she finished 20th overall nationally with a new pb time. The Boys events were held in the afternoon where Will H swam in the U11 50m Breaststroke category and finished 17th nationally with a competitive time of 44. 85. Rafi W held his own in the Boys U13 50m Butterfly event and came 12th overall after dropping his qualifying time of 1. 41 secs to finish with a time of 32. 28. Joey S who is relatively new to this venue swam in the Boys U10 50m Breaststroke category and was placed 6th in his semi-final heat and then finished 7th place overall in the final with a time of 44. 73. While many of the competitors had trained over the winter months, we could not have hoped for a better day, with Cranleigh witnessing all athletes hit a purple patch and bring home medal after medal. The rush started with a gold in the boys’ u12 1500m, with Joshua D executing a tactical masterclass, jumping his only real challenger early and effectively time-trialling the final lap. This was followed in the next race, the girls’ under 12 1500m, with Chloe B and Sienna G working brilliantly together to secure a silver and bronze respectively, with Chloe securing her berth in the Nationals’ team, and Sienna running on a sore Achilles and bravely holding off an oncoming fourth place challenger. Rafi W then put on a procession for his u14 1500m to bring in yet another gold for the squad. Livs W debuted in the 70m hurdles, as did Bestan L in her 75m hurdles, before running a fabulous 300m, as did Hattie B in the 1500m, both just missing out on the podium, in fourth place. Another fourth was Marilyn M, running in the age group above, as there is not an event for her own year. This topic has allowed pupils to see how mathematics plays a vital role not just in history, but in many modern-day careers that demand resilience, perseverance, and sharp problem-solving skills. On Tuesday 3rd June, the class travelled to Bletchley Park – the historic home of Britain’s wartime codebreakers. Pupils had the unique opportunity to visit the very hut where Alan Turing worked, view a replica of the famous Bombe machine, and learn exactly how the Enigma machine encrypted secret messages. They also took part in a hands-on, D-Day themed codebreaking activity that required them to listen to and record morse code, and then use an online enigma simulator to translate it. Did you know that the Enigma machine had 158,962,555,217,826,360,000 possible settings – can you read that number? It was a unique trip that brought history, maths, and real-world problem-solving together, showing the importance of resilience and determination to achieve goals. --- - Published: 2025-05-08 - Modified: 2025-05-08 - URL: https://www.cranleigh.org/prep/2025/05/08/adult-and-child-golf-competition/ - Categories: Golf On Bank Holiday Monday, 20 pairs of parents and children took to the Cranleigh school course to compete in the inaugural Adult and Child golf competition. The format was foursomes, adult and child taking alternate shots over the 9 holes. The children took the lead by playing the odd numbered holes, while the parents looked to take on the more challenging tee shots on the even holes. The morning session was hotly contested. Jason and Billy, Jamie and Huxley looked to challenge with 40 points, but Chris and Monty walked off the course, taking the club house lead with 46 points. As the 11am tee time rolled around, the score looked unbeatable. While the afternoon scoring reflected the harsher weather conditions, this didn’t stop Sam and Ollie coming in with 48 points, a truly impressive display of golf. The only prizes left to fight for were the nearest the pin. Jason coaxing the ball narrowly closer than Jamie and Paul to take the prize on the 4th hole. Sadly, no children managed to hit the green on the 5th hole on the morning, though Emily managed to put the ball right text to the putting surface to take the prize. An amazing morning had by all, thank you all for making it what it was. We’re taking on the thrilling task of designing, building, and launching our very own rocket to compete against other students and schools. This challenge will put our creativity, science, and engineering skills to the test in an exciting and competitive environment! UKROC challenged us to design a model rocket with specific criteria. Our rocket must carry a fragile payload (two eggs! ) and reach an altitude of 790 feet, while ensuring the flight time falls within a precise range of 41 to 44 seconds. The rules change every year to keep things fresh, pushing us to come up with new ideas and innovative solutions. This gives us the chance to learn from our designs, improve, and get better with each competition. The South West Regional competition will take place in March. The UKROC competition isn’t just about winning—it’s about learning. By participating, we’ll dive deep into aerodynamics, physics, engineering, and materials science. We’ll also build essential skills like teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. Testing different designs and materials will give us a hands-on understanding of how scientific concepts work in real life. We’re all passionate about science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM), and UKROC is the perfect opportunity to challenge ourselves and put our skills to the test. It’s also a chance to collaborate with like-minded students and professionals, gaining valuable experience along the way. They remained undefeated throughout the competition, demonstrating remarkable resilience against exceptional teams from across England and Scotland. Cranleigh Prep began strongly with a 3-0 victory in their opening group game against St Peter's School, York, scoring early and then defending resolutely to secure the perfect start. However, a game break did not favour the team, leading to a lacklustre first-half performance in their second match against the quality Durlston College team, resulting in a 0-1 deficit. A dominant second-half effort allowed the team to equalise, but they couldn't find a second goal, and the match ended in a 1-1 draw. With one match left in the group, a win was essential to secure a top spot and a place in the cup competition. The boys delivered their most complete attacking performance, winning 5-1 against King's College Prep, which allowed them to advance to the semi-finals. Knowing they had made the top four was not enough; they started their semi-final against Gresham's School by quickly scoring to take a 1-0 lead. Although they missed several chances to extend their lead, outstanding defence, particularly during penalty corners, kept the score unchanged, much to the relief of the players, coaches, and supporters. Placed in a challenging group, the team competed well in every match and were narrowly on the wrong end of a few of the results. However, their exemplary conduct was once again recognised by the umpires, with one commenting, "You have a really lovely team and a great group of boys. " Cranleigh progressed to the plate competition, where they narrowly missed out on a place in the final after a tense golden goal defeat to Cargilfield School. Cranleigh dominated their group, securing victories against Holmewood House, Hurst, and Windlesham House with a combined score of 17-0. A comfortable 4-0 win against Feltonfleet in the quarter-finals put them into a semi-final against an excellent Hall Grove side. This match became more critical, with only the finalists qualifying for the National Finals. Scoring against the run of play, Cranleigh went into half-time relieved to be 1-0 up. Although they played much better and dominated the second half, the team conceded a late equaliser to set up five minutes of extra time. With no further goals scored, it went to a tense penalty shootout, but with a miss and a save from Hall Grove and the first two scored by Cranleigh, the boys went through to the final. With a place at the National Finals secured, the team ran out comfortable 2-0 winners in the final against Windlesham House to claim the title of IAPS Regional Champions. Pupils were able to learn about our solar system and discover how rockets are launched. The highlight of the visit was an incredible tour of the Milky Way, where we learned about the planets and their moons. We also got hands-on with Newton’s third law—‘for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction’—by launching rockets in the lab using a rapid combustion reaction. #STEM #RocketScience --- - Published: 2025-01-29 - Modified: 2025-01-29 - URL: https://www.cranleigh.org/prep/2025/01/29/exploring-energy-concepts/ - Categories: News, Academic, Science Form 6 have been exploring the concept of energy stores and transfers through a series of hands-on experiments and activities. One of their key investigations involved studying the transfer of energy in a bouncing ball. By accurately recording the ball's bounce using their iPad cameras, the pupils were able to observe and measure how energy is transferred during the ball's motion, as well as calculate the percentage of energy lost with each bounce. This experiment helped the pupils understand how energy is conserved and dissipated in real-world scenarios. Continuing their learning journey, Form 6 then shifted their focus to the energy found in different foods. They engaged in an in-depth evaluation of how energy is stored in various types of food and how that energy can be released and used by the body. By conducting experiments and analysing nutritional information, the pupils gained a better understanding of the role food plays in providing the necessary energy for daily activities. Through these activities, Form 6 developed a deeper appreciation for the different forms of energy in their everyday lives and how energy can be measured, transferred, and used effectively. --- - Published: 2025-01-29 - Modified: 2025-01-29 - URL: https://www.cranleigh.org/prep/2025/01/29/eton-fives-girls-u13-nationals/ - Categories: News, Sport, Fives Winning the National Girls’ Championship has always been a tough challenge. Despite reaching the final five times before, we’ve never been able to clinch the title—until now. Yesterday, the girls headed to Highgate with hopes high, determined to see if this could finally be the year. We fielded four pairs, and the energy was infectious. In the qualifying rounds, three of the four pairs advanced, with Lucinda and Daisy narrowly missing out. Given that Lucinda had only recently started playing, this was an impressive feat in itself. Over the course of the day, Lucinda and Daisy made significant strides, eventually becoming the plate winners. From three pairs in the quarterfinals, we were down to two in the semi-finals. Unfortunately, Tilly and Ceci lost a close match to our second pair, Piper and Aoife. In the semis, Piper and Aoife were edged out by Highgate in another tightly contested game. The final, however, was completely dominated by our first pair, Hattie and Olive. They delivered a commanding performance, winning 12-0, 12-2. Without a doubt, they were the best pair, and we are already looking forward to seeing how they fare against the boys in the Prep Schools competition later this year. The progress made by all the girls this year has been remarkable, and it was so rewarding to see their hard work pay off. Cranleigh entered five pairs with the top eight pairs on the day being invited back for the Elite finals at Harrow on 3rd Feb. The day started with pairs being allocated to four groups with the top three moving through to the main competition. Four pairs qualified with only Jamie and James narrowly missing out after some fantastic performances against strong competition. Spirits were high with three out of the four securing top places in their groups and therefore being seeded into the quarters. George and Avey did brilliantly well to progress through their play-off round securing a place both in the quarter-finals and qualification for finals. With qualification to the finals secured the question which remained was who was going to triumph on the day. From four pairs in the quarters we succeeded in getting three pairs through to the semis with Avey and George losing to another Cranleigh pair. In the semis Wilbur and Freddie and Huxley and Josh went out after strong performances. The final was undoubtedly the match of the day with Finn and Monty taking on Belmont 1 from North London. Having qualified for the IAPS National Football Finals in Oxford and reaching the Surrey Cup Final, meant a big backlog in fixtures. The IAPS Finals day (held at Summer Fields school) was full of high quality teams and so getting out of a difficult group and into the main cup competition was an excellent achievement. Frustratingly, we drew the strongest team in the quarter finals and narrowly lost out to the eventual winners, The Hall School, but to be considered the 5th best prep school team in the country is no mean feat. On Friday 22nd November, Cranleigh played Aldro in the Surrey Cup Final, held at Danes Hill School. We had been beaten quite comprehensively in a regular fixture earlier in the season but this match was completely different. Cranleigh played the better football throughout the match and went 2-0 up with goals from Fred H and Josh AB. In the final few minutes, Aldro’s direct play paid dividends and they scored twice in quick succession to force extra time. Momentum then became a factor and Aldro grabbed the winner to take the trophy. Despite the disappointment, the boys’ progression this year has been phenomenal and they should all be extremely proud of themselves. --- - Published: 2024-11-26 - Modified: 2024-11-26 - URL: https://www.cranleigh.org/prep/2024/11/26/visit-from-the-charlie-waller-mental-health-trust/ - Categories: News, Charity Cranleigh Prep was delighted to welcome back Jenny Langley from the CWMT trust (The Charlie Waller Mental Health Trust). The purpose of the trip was to investigate footpath erosion and explore the human impact on the environment by comparing a well-used track with a less frequented one. The children conducted several experiments to collect data. An infiltration test measured how quickly water was absorbed into the soil, while a soil compaction test involved dropping a steel pin from a set height to assess how compacted the ground had become from foot traffic. The cross-sectional area of each path was also measured to examine erosion levels. Using a quadrat, pupils assessed vegetation along the tracks, noting the number of species, their height, and frequency. After gathering their data, all pupils enjoyed a fun orienteering activity, working in small groups to find hidden markers using an OS map. The follow-up at school will involve them creating a mini-project using their data to answer the hypotheses. The use of both ‘Google Docs’ and ‘Google Sheets’ will further enhance their computer skill sets. This hands-on experience gave the children an engaging way to apply classroom knowledge to real-world environmental issues, while also encouraging teamwork and critical thinking skills. --- - Published: 2024-10-14 - Modified: 2024-10-14 - URL: https://www.cranleigh.org/prep/2024/10/14/49262/ - Categories: News, Activities What a great LAUNCH (Learning and Understanding New Challenging Horizons) activity last week. Equipped with clipboards and curiosity, the children set out to observe and record various aspects of village life. One of their key tasks was to monitor the volume and type of traffic over a ten-minute period. This hands-on activity not only engaged their analytical skills but also gave them a real-world glimpse into the flow of a small settlement. Following this, the children investigated local shops and businesses to determine whether they sold goods or services. They classified goods as either convenience items (everyday essentials) or comparison items (purchased less frequently). Services were noted as either low order (basic, frequent needs) or high order (specialized, less frequent needs). These exercises helped the children understand the functional aspects of different types of settlements and how they cater to various community needs. During their survey, several members of the public showed interest in the children’s activities, sparking delightful interactions and providing the kids with an opportunity to explain their project. These moments of engagement highlighted the community spirit of Cranleigh and enriched the children’s learning experience. Overall, this field trip was a valuable and enjoyable educational experience, making the abstract concepts of settlements come alive for our young learners. --- - Published: 2024-06-06 - Modified: 2024-06-06 - URL: https://www.cranleigh.org/prep/2024/06/06/summer-concert-4/ - Categories: News, Music The first half of term ended with a bang at the annual Summer Concert, with the School and parents being treated to an array of acts that would put many festivals this summer to shame. Proceedings began when the Wyatt Hall became a hotbed of Latin heat as the Senior Percussion group processed in, banging out the rhythms of Rio and waking everyone up. Hot on the heels of that, we headed north for an Uptown Hoedown, performed exquisitely by the Symphony Orchestra. Next came the younger musicians, with contributions from the Junior Orchestra, Junior Band and finally the Lower School Choir, whose version of A Million Dreams melted even the most granite of hearts, with stunning solos from Blake G, Savannah L and Lily L. Following on, we witnessed a plethora of popular music performances and arrangements, with renditions of The Beatles’ Blackbird from the Advanced Violinists, the Senior Band delivering the goods in Breakdance Brass and the Form 3 Choir performing Sing delightfully. After the final two junior performances (percussion with Tom-Tom Tomahawk and a rocking medley from the Guitar Group) we went full-Glastonbury, first with the Form 4 Guitar Group’s Summer of ’69, with George S on vocals that would put Brian Adams to shame. CPS’s answer to Led Zeppelin continued the rock anthems with Stairway to Heaven, with Levi L and Arthur W grinding their respective axes to power-ballad perfection with some outstanding solos. The final popular number was a beautiful interpretation of Vance Joy’s Riptide,... --- - Published: 2024-06-05 - Modified: 2024-06-05 - URL: https://www.cranleigh.org/prep/2024/06/05/form-1-indian-dance/ - Categories: News, Dance, Activities Form 1 classes had great fun learning an Indian Dance with Miss Kimberley. Caia also posted excellent individual results, finishing 4th and 7th out of 198 riders. Over 700 riders from 232 schools around the country converged on Hickstead Show Ground for the National Schools Equestrian Association Eventers Challenge Championship and National County Dressage and Show Jumping Championships. Taking place over three full days of competition, the Saturday belonged to Cranleigh riders who stood on the top of the podium in all three Championship classes of the day. Our Junior Eventers Challenge team was reduced to just a team of three so we knew that the scores of all three riders would have to count, and that only clear rounds over the course combining show jumps, fixed cross country fences and a large water feature would be enough for a top eight finish. Just going clear is not enough either. Riders have to judge their pace to be as close to the optimum time as possible and all three of ours did just that, with Caia N finishing 0. 31 seconds off the optimum time in her team round. Ete M was only slightly slower and Sophie B a touch too quick, but still within four seconds of time. But this wasn't just any ordinary excursion; it was an opportunity to dive headfirst into the exhilarating world of sailing! Setting sail from Rockley Sailing Centre, our young sailors, many of whom were beginners to the sport, embraced the challenge of mastering the Pico sailing dinghies. Day one greeted them with boisterous winds and crashing waves, providing a true test of their newfound skills. Despite a few capsizes along the way, their determination remained unyielding. As the sun rose on day two, a picturesque scene awaited them: clear blue skies, gentle breezes, and tranquil seas. It was a stark contrast to the previous day's wild adventure, offering the perfect conditions for honing their sailing prowess. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, our pupils not only conquered the waves but also achieved their RYA Stage 1 certification, marking a significant milestone in their sailing journey. Laughter echoed across the waters as friendships were forged, and memories made. Of course, no sailing adventure would be complete without proper gear. Wetsuits and buoyancy aids were donned, ensuring the safety and comfort of our young sailors throughout their expedition. But the excitement didn't end with the trip. Many of our pupils have caught the sailing bug and are eager to continue their journey beyond the school grounds.
