It was badly broken, having been found at the back of a cupboard at the Prep School.\u00a0 Archie and his father, James, very kindly had it repaired in Dorking and it now sits proudly on the mantelpiece in our Reception.<\/p>\n<p>In 1934, the 37<sup>th<\/sup> steam locomotive (Engine 936) in the Southern Railway\u2019s Class V was named \u2018Cranleigh\u2019 after the school.\u00a0 All 40 of the steam engines in this class were named after well-known English public schools, hence it was known as the Schools\u2019 Class.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2018Cranleigh\u2019 steam engine was designed by <strong>Richard Edward Lloyd Maunsell<\/strong> (May 1868- March 1944), who was <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chief_Mechanical_Engineer\">Chief Mechanical Engineer<\/a> (CME) of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_Eastern_and_Chatham_Railway\">South Eastern and Chatham Railway<\/a> from 1913 until the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Railways_Act_1921\">1923 Grouping<\/a> . He was then promoted to CME of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Southern_Railway_(UK)\">Southern Railway<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/England\">England<\/a> until 1937.
