Whether you want to perform in our full-scale productions or would prefer to join the backstage crew, there are opportunities for every Cranleighan to find their place in the spotlight.

Drama is a huge part of life here and prospective parents are often surprised how seriously we take it! All pupils are able to audition for the annual main school production and there are smaller plays throughout the year. Production value is high and we choose works that will stretch pupils’ abilities. Recent productions have included: West Side Story, Shakespeare in Love, Little Shop of Horrors, Once Up A Myth, Neverland and We Will Rock You.

Sixth Form students regularly produce small fringe plays throughout the year and will often take responsibility for writing and directing scripts for inter-House competitions. These fun and light-hearted productions not only allow younger students to take on the main roles, but allow older students to develop their leadership and communication skills.

Taking part in a production, whether as an actor, designer, stage manager or technician provides an unparalleled challenge which builds teamwork and creates long-lasting friendship.

— Mr Jon Scott, Director of Drama

I think the best thing about theatre at Cranleigh is that it’s for everyone.

— PJ, former student

Alongside these productions there are opportunities to produce House Plays and to take Speech and Drama lessons. Pupils are encouraged to attend public theatre performances in London and across the South East, and we host a regular series of performance masterclasses.

Our students also play a significant role behind the scenes; operating lighting and sound equipment, as well as running the show. Weekly theatre sessions are open to all pupils and not just those studying drama as an academic option. Students learn technical skills, design shows and build scenery, and are encouraged to take on back-stage leadership roles in the Sixth Form.
