For the 26th year running the Cranleigh School golf team were employed by the R&A, the custodians of golf, to man the iconic yellow scoreboards on the 18th green at the 141st Open Championship held at Royal Lytham and St. Anne’s Golf Club.

The opening practice days allowed the boys to interact with pre-tournament, and thus more relaxed, pros. Pupils repeatedly witnessed their sheer skill at close quarters, photos were taken, hats were signed and tweets re-tweeted.

As the tournament began the two-storeyed yellow box became our home, but we were not without visitors. John Inverdale’s BBC Radio 5 Live team sent Mark “Chappers” Chapman in for an interview with Mr Monk and they broadcast our team in action when a change to the scoreboard came through.  So impressed was he with the charm and good looks of the group that he dubbed them “One Direction’s older brothers” live on air!

The Cranleigh team worked in an enthusiastic and professional manner throughout the week and had an experience they will never forget. The Open was decided with the final putt; Australian Adam Scott’s 18th-hole bogey handed victory to South African Ernie Els.
