Tuesday 3rd December 2013 will go down as one of the proudest dates in the Schools’ rugby history with two breaking stories for everyone to get excited about.
Sam Arnold (current 1st XV Captain) was selected for the Ireland U18 squad, having represented them last year even though he was only 16 years old at the time.
Following this was the news that last season’s 1st XV prop and Senior Prefect, Will Yeeles, has been selected for the Cambridge University squad for their annual Varsity match against Oxford at Twickenham on the 12th December. Cranleigh School’s Director of Rugby, Andrew Houston, explains, “This is a remarkable achievement for a fresher who is only 18 years old, particularly playing in the prop forward position.”
Adding to this remarkable news was hearing that Will will be playing against Henry Lamont (1st XV 2011) who has been selected on the wing for the second year running for Oxford! Both Henry and Will were in East House and there will not be many schools in the country who have ever had two ex-pupils, just 18 and 19, playing as undergraduates at the same time in this prestigious match!
Director of Rugby, Andrew Houston commented: “It was such a proud day for the School: to have three pieces of news like this has completely blown us all away. All three are great players and gave so much to the rugby here at Cranleigh. I couldn’t be happier or prouder and wish them all the best. With our guys on either side, I just hope both score a hat-trick and the game ends in a draw!”
The varsity match is shown live on Sky sports on Thursday 12th December at 2pm.
