On the 8th and 9th March our Head of Swimming, Will Philpot, travelled to Ponds Forge in Sheffield for the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) National Speed Championships.

photoThis was his first major competition in this discipline and he was keen to make an impression. Competing for Crawley Town Lifesaving Club, Will came back with 2 Bronze medals in the 4x50metre Obstacle Relay and 4×25 metre Manikin Relay, in both of which World Championship Qualifying Times were achieved!

The highlight for Will came on the last event of the competition on Sunday evening, the 4×50 metre Medley Relay where he led the team to a Gold Medal in a New British Record and World Championships Qualifying Time. The previous Club Record stood at 1:37:75 and was held by Loughborough University; the National Record was held by Team GB at 1:36:57. Will and his fellow Crawley Team members broke both records clocking 1:36:25. Will’s split time of 24:52 also now ranks him as one of the top 30 swimmers in the UK for 50 metres Freestyle.

Will is now going into preparation for the World Championships which take place in Montpellier, France in September.
