As the long wait comes to an end for the UVth formers, the School is celebrating its best ever GCSE results, with almost a third of all grades achieved being an A* and almost two-thirds either an A* or A.

Further, an outstanding 86.9 per cent of grades were A* to B and the overall pass rate is almost 100 per cent with all our pupils passing the core subjects of Maths and English.

The majority of students will remain at Cranleigh to join the Sixth Form.DSC_0322

Director of Studies, Mr David Boggitt, said: “We are delighted with this year’s exam results, which are some of our best ever, reflecting the huge amount of hard work invested by both students and staff over time.  Our dedicated teachers are all very proud of our students and their outstanding results, particularly in a year of such significant change to GCSEs.”

Changes introduced by the former Education Secretary Michael Gove have made GCSEs more demanding, raising grade boundaries, toughening up papers in some subjects and placing emphasis on exams, rather than course assessment.

Among Cranleigh’s exceptional results, 19 students were awarded eight or more A*s, and Olivia Chesser, Laura Clark, Poppy Glaister, Ali Johnson, Roisin Kilty, Maddy Lock, Henri Martin, Ellie McAleese-Park and Phoebe Osborn all achieved 10 or more A* grades.

The new Head of Cranleigh, Mr Martin Reader, said: “These record-breaking results demonstrate powerfully the Cranleigh way in which success and busy-ness outside the classroom go hand-in-hand with academic excellence.  They are a genuine tribute to the leadership of Guy Waller as he retires from Cranleigh. He passed on a flourishing and successful school and I am very much looking forward to building on this success next year.”

Mr Reader joins the School in September after eight years as Head of Wellington School in Somerset.
