This week the Upper Fifth artists visited Tate Britain to spend time looking at artwork first hand. Sketching and note taking are the main strategies employed to slow our looking and interrogate artworks.

The students’ current theme of ‘Journeys’ enabled them to make connections to a range of artworks from landscape painting, found sculpture and montaged photography. Anthea Hamilton’s extraordinary installation/performance piece “The Squash” in the central gallery space was especially engaging as the performer interacted with visitors.
