On Tuesday, Form 2 visited Fishbourne Roman Palace near Chichester or, as the Romans would have called it, Noviomagus Reginorum! They learnt all about the chance discovery and subsequent archaeological exploration of this amazing place – the largest Roman villa ever found in the British Isles.
They had a wonderful time inspecting the mosaics including the world renowned ‘Cupid riding on a Dolphin’ mosaic, which incorporates 375,000 separate tiles.
The children had the opportunity to try out many Roman activities in the workshops, including writing on beeswax tablets, playing Roman board games, making miniature mosaics and engineering Roman arches. Some children even dressed up as Roman citizens… or slaves.
The trip complimented the current Humanities topic on the Romans. Oliver S said: “I had a great time and we learnt so much more about the Romans.”
