Form 4 pupils embarked on an educational adventure into Cranleigh village as part of their Settlements topic in Geography.
Equipped with clipboards and curiosity, the children set out to observe and record various aspects of village life. One of their key tasks was to monitor the volume and type of traffic over a ten-minute period. This hands-on activity not only engaged their analytical skills but also gave them a real-world glimpse into the flow of a small settlement.
Following this, the children investigated local shops and businesses to determine whether they sold goods or services. They classified goods as either convenience items (everyday essentials) or comparison items (purchased less frequently). Services were noted as either low order (basic, frequent needs) or high order (specialized, less frequent needs). These exercises helped the children understand the functional aspects of different types of settlements and how they cater to various community needs.
During their survey, several members of the public showed interest in the children’s activities, sparking delightful interactions and providing the kids with an opportunity to explain their project. These moments of engagement highlighted the community spirit of Cranleigh and enriched the children’s learning experience.
Overall, this field trip was a valuable and enjoyable educational experience, making the abstract concepts of settlements come alive for our young learners.
