Centenary Celebration: David Attenborough Day

Celebrating Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday with a day of nature photography, art, and environmental pledges.

Last Friday, we had a fantastic day celebrating Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday. As a lifelong ambassador for our planet, Sir David inspired a day of activities designed to encourage environmental stewardship and appreciation in every child.

Here are the activities pupils took part in:

Macro Photography

Using photography to find the “small and wonderful,” pupils explored our grounds to develop a micro-perspective of nature. This activity encouraged them to slow down and notice the intricate details of our ecosystem, teaching that even the smallest elements of nature are vital and worthy of protection.

Pledging & Painting

To turn environmental intent into action, pupils wrote personal conservation pledges on laser-cut oak leaves for a communal wishing tree. Collaborative art followed, with each pupil painting a square of a large-scale mural. This demonstrated how individual efforts, when combined, create a powerful and beautiful collective impact.

Zootropolis Dance

The children choreographed a bespoke “Zootropolis” dance inspired by their animal costumes. This allowed them to physically connect with the wildlife Sir David has spent his life documenting, building empathy through movement and creative expression.

Planting & Mindfulness

To leave a lasting legacy, every child planted a spring bulb for a celebration garden that will bloom year after year. This was paired with mindfulness games to help pupils quiet their minds and deeply appreciate our school grounds, leaving them with a lasting sense of gratitude for the natural world.

A huge thank you to Mrs HR and Mrs Brewer for organising such a wonderful day of activities. We would also like to thank Mr Perry for his help with the collaborative mural and Miss Kath for choreographing the Zootropolis dance with the children.
