On Friday February 8th, VIth Form Classicists were given the opportunity to welcome Mr Guy Westwood, lecturer at Magdalen College, Oxford University, to speak about “The Iliad”. His Classics.Mr Guy Westwood.NEWSspeech was absorbing and he cast new light over some key themes, addressing the role of the gods, the relationships between characters, and whether or not Book 24 provided a satisfying closure to this epic.

His detailed references to the Greek text, combined with more general discussion about Homer’s techniques including formulae and ring composition made for a comprehensive lecture suited to all members of the audience, and a very interesting evening for all who attended.
