A home to our community since 1865, our campus effortlessly blends historic buildings with new, purpose-built facilities. We are fortunate to live and learn in 280-acres of beautiful Surrey countryside, and the extensive green space supports the physical and mental wellbeing of students and staff.
Academic
The vast majority of academic teaching takes place in the Emms Centre, Connaught Block and the van Hasselt Centre. Although varying in their age, all our classrooms are bright and airy. The Williams Library and Reading room, located at the front of school, offers quiet space for research and reflection. Across our campus, we have lecture theatres and smaller seminar rooms which cater to a range of teaching and learning styles.
Art & Design
The Woodyer Studios are some of the best school art facilities in the country. We have six large studios for painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture and ceramics, and a number of computer suites support digital artists. Design Engineering boasts three fully-equipped studios and the latest 2D and 3D CAD software.
Sports
Our sports facilities are first-rate. Alongside our 10 grass pitches for rugby, cricket and football, we benefit from the Woodland Fitness Centre which houses Strength and Conditioning, Trevor Abbot Sports Centre, 25-metre swimming pool, nine-hole golf course, equestrian centre, 13 cricket nets and an outdoor bubble for winter practice, eight netball courts, squash courts, six fives courts and an outdoor education centre.
Theatre
Speech Hall is our largest theatre space and is used for productions, concerts and events. It is a flexible space with a varying format of staging and seating. For smaller, more intimate productions, we have the 100-seat Vivian Cox Theatre.
Music School
The Merriman Music School underwent a full renovation in 2000. At its heart is the Clive Stevens Recital Hall with tiered seating for 100 and a fully computerised lighting, sound and projection system. In addition, we boast a professionally equipped recording studio, an insulated Rock Room and extensive facilities for teaching and practice.
Chapel
The Chapel of the Holy Child has been at the centre of School life since 1869. The beautiful neo-gothic building was designed by Henry Woodyer, the architect of the main body of the School. Whilst the exterior is almost unchanged, the interior has been constantly evolving, with the addition of a new Mander organ. New flooring and seating were added in 2015 to celebrate the School’s 150th anniversary.
Quad
The original school was designed and built around the red-brick quad by Henry Woodyer in 1865 and the buildings contained dormitories and the Headmaster’s house as well as classrooms. The cloisters were little more than lean-tos and were renovated and improved in 1907 by then Headmaster George Allen. The square was originally paved but today its green lawn is an iconic view of Cranleigh for the students who cross it to reach the classroom blocks and Dining Hall on either side.
