This week 31 Lower Fifth pupils took a tour of the Roman mosaics of Sussex.

The pupils, a mixture of Latinists, Classicists and interested others, first made their own mosaics under the expert guidance of Miss Griffiths and Sixth Form artists-cum-classicists Amy, Emma and Nicky.

Having developed their appreciation of this intricate and demanding skill, the group visited Bignor Roman Villa and then Fishbourne Roman Palace. We saw some of the finest mosaics in England, and were able to place them within the context both of British history and their Classical GCSE courses.

After an ice cream, the pupils left with a deeper appreciation both of art and of Britain’s place in the world.
