In an exciting second weekend of indoor hockey, Georgie L. was part of the Guildford Hockey Club team that won their last two games on Sunday to claim second place in National League Division 1 and earn promotion to the Women’s Premier Division next season for the first time in the club’s history.
The previous weekend had seen them beat Wimbledon and Holcombe 7-5 and 8-3 respectively before succumbing 5-6 to the strong Knole Park side on Sunday morning. They finished that weekend with a 4-3 victory over Clifton leaving them on 9 points and in the hunt.
This past weekend saw them start off with a 3-4 loss to Harleston Magpies in another tight game before beating Cambridge City 9-4 with Georgie scoring a hat-trick. At the end of Saturday three sides – Knole Park, Reading and Harleston Magpies – had 13 points and Guildford had 12 points. There were a number of games between these four teams which meant any of them could get promotion.
Guildford comfortably beat Stourport 7-2 with Georgie scoring another two goals. So, to the crunch game against Reading and a win would get them into the vital second place and promotion. Two goals down in the first four minutes, Guildford were level at 2-2 by the end of the first quarter including another goal through Georgie. 3-2 up at half time, Guildford then had a good third quarter extending their lead to 5-2 and although they had a couple of green cards and a couple of yellow cards in the fourth quarter, they ran out 6-2 winners thereby clinching promotion to the Premier Division – a great achievement. Well done to Georgie.
