Friday 20th January lunchtime saw the senior section of the Pat Dixon woodwind competition take place. This was a thoroughly enjoyable event with musical and entertaining playing from all the students.

Of particular note was Ned W. who performed twice with a soulful rendition of Bernstein’s Tonight on alto saxophone and an expressive performance of the prelude from the Victorian Kitchen Garden by Paul Reade. The two oboe players, Herb D. and Rosie G. showed great control and musicality in their performances of Marcello’s Largo and Allegretto and the first movement of Albinoni’s Concerto in D respectively.

Ultimately there were two standout performances. Flautist Emily R. provided us with a beautiful interpretation of Romance by Widor featuring a great sound, well-judged phrasing, technical fluency and a mature understanding of the music. Oscar G. took the prize with a virtually flawless playing of Sarabande and Allegro by Grovlez. His stellar musicianship shone through from the very first note with well-shaped phrases and a great variety both of dynamic and tone colour throughout.
