After winning the Hampton Sevens two weeks ago, the U18 sevens team travelled to Richmond to compete in the Edwin Doran Sevens tournament. This tournament consists of 50 schools from across the south of England and Wales.

The squad went through their group in the last the sixteen where they faced National XV’s Semi-finalists Blundell’s. The team played well and came out winners 24-7 with a terrific defensive display where the team held out even being down to only 6 men. With only 20 minute rests between each match, the games then came thick and fast with a quarter final against Beechen Cliff School (who are the ACE Bath rugby academy). Again the team played beautifully winning 27-12 progressing through to the semi-finals vs Eton. The team started strongly and pulled away just before half time to eventually win that match 29-0. This was arguably the performance of the day from the team and they showed an excellent belief in both their defensive and attacking systems.

The final was against Millfield (who the side played two weeks ag0 in the Hampton final). Cranleigh have only ever won this tournament once in our history but sadly we couldn’t manage to bring home the title with us losing small little contests throughout the game to eventually lose the match 28-12. Although the side were gutted, to come second in such a competitive tournament showed a great mixture of skill and heart throughout the day.

Well done to the whole squad on what was still a superb result and set of performances.
